All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the Village of West Dundee:
- At least 21 years of age and under 35 years of age at the time of written examination (January 14, 2025), except per Illinois Statute 65 ILCS 5/0-1-7 and 5/10-1-12 of the Civil Service Act, which provides in part, that the age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed as a full-time firefighter in a regularly constituted fire department of any municipality or fire protection district located in Illinois;
- U.S. Citizenship;
- No felony convictions and must be of good moral character;
- High school graduate or GED equivalent;
- Possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record;
- Possess a valid EMT-B License from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) - at the time of Oral Interview (February 10, 2025);
- Possess a valid Paramedic License from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) - at the time of conditional employment offer;
- Present a valid CPAT card with Ladder Climb at the time of conditional employment offer, with an issue date within 12 months of the date of at the time of conditional employment;
- Must complete the Basic Operations Firefighter academy, if not already certified, within the first year of employment;
- Must successfully pass a written examination with a score of 70% or better;
- Residency within 75 Miles of the Village of West Dundee within one year of hire;
- Must successfully complete an oral interview, background investigation, medical examination, drug test, polygraph, and psychological examination;
Preference Points will be awarded as determined by the Village of West Dundee for the following:
- Military preference - five (5) points. Awarded to applicants who have served a minimum of twelve (12) months on active duty in the service of the U.S. military and who have either been honorably discharged or, in place of an honorable discharge, are still serving in an active or inactive reserve status.
- Education preference – (2.5) points. Candidates must have an associate's degree in fire science or emergency medical services from an accredited community or junior college or a bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university.
- Paramedic preference - Paramedic (2.5) - Current EMT-P license by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
- Additional points - one to ten (10) points. Candidates currently employed by the West Dundee Fire Department or who were employed by the West Dundee Fire department in a part-time capacity and left the department in good standing within 18 months before the application deadline shall be awarded one point for one full year of cumulative service; three (3) total points for two (2) full years of cumulative service; or five (5) total points for three (3) or more full years of cumulative service. The Chief of the Department will verify eligibility.
- Additional Certifications - Up to five (5) points - 2.5 points for certification by the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office as a Basic Operations Firefighter (Firefighter 2); an additional 2.5 points for certification by the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office as an Advanced Technician Firefighter (Firefighter 3).

Applications submitted online by Friday, January 3, 2025 at 4:00 PM (CST) will be accepted. Faxed, e-mailed, mailed or dropped off applications will NOT be accepted. Only one application per person, per testing cycle will be accepted.
Online Written Examination Testing: After completing all application materials and reviewing of minimum qualifications, successful applicants will be invited to participate in remote online written exam testing available between Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 9:00 AM and Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at 4:00 PM. Candidates will need to have access to a laptop or desktop computer. All candidates will receive an email approximately one week prior regarding their status in the process, along with further instructions for taking the online written exam. NOTE: Please be sure to check your email spam folder. Many email account providers automatically send our emails there in error (i.e. Google, Yahoo, etc.).
