The Village of Glencoe, Illinois
The Village of Glencoe Public Safety Commission is accepting applications for the position of Public Safety Officer, a unique position that is a certified law enforcement officer, firefighter and emergency medical technician. No prior experience or certification is required.
Public Safety Officers are highly unique – as police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians, Glencoe’s officers provide complete public safety services to the Glencoe community. If you become a Public Safety Officer, you will be trained to perform all three job functions.
Starting Salary: $88,595 (effective January 1, 2025); top salary is $130,388 after 7 yearsPopulation: 8,800Sworn Public Safety Officers: 36 (including one Director, one Deputy Chief, eight Lieutenants, and 26 Public Safety Officers)
All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the Village of Glencoe:
- U.S. citizenship at the time of filing an application;
- No felony convictions, pursuant to Illinois state law (Note: a misdemeanor or felony conviction does not constitute automatic bar to employment. The nature of the offense, the date of the offense, the surrounding circumstances and the relevance of the offense to the position sought may, however, be considered in assessing qualifications for employment.)
- Possess a valid state-issued driver's license;
- Minimum of 20 years of age and 6 months by the date of the written examination (January 23, 2025);
- Under the age of 35 as of the application deadline date (January 6, 2025), unless the applicant meets one of the exceptions listed in Section 4.1(B)(2) of the Glencoe Public Safety Commission's Rules and Regulations or one of the exceptions listed in 65 ILCS 5/10-1-7.1(C). - Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent;
- Completion of two years of studies either equaling an Associate's Degree -OR- 60 hours of college credit by January 6, 2025 (from a junior college, college, or university that is accredited by a national accreditation agency);
- Possess a valid Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (POWER) Test Card issued by an agency authorized by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board to conduct the POWER Test.
- POWER test cards must be dated no earlier than six months prior to the date of your application and no later than January 6, 2025. All applicants must obtain a POWER test card by, the application deadline date, January 6, 2025 to continue eligibility in the examination process.
- Subject to test availability, POWER Test Cards may be obtained through the Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA - http://www.nipsta.org/202/POWER-Test); Joliet Junior College (https://www.jjc.edu/about-jjc/places-interest/power-testing); or Triton College (https://www.triton.edu/cja/#power)
- Note: CPAT cards are NOT accepted, only the POWER test card is accepted. If you have a CPAT card, you will need to take the POWER test.
Submission of Application:
Applications must be submitted online by January 6, 2025 at 4:00 PM (CST). Faxed, e-mailed, mailed or hand-delivered applications will NOT be accepted. Only one application per person, per testing cycle will be accepted. Please note that technical support for application submittal is only available during Stanard & Associates' normal business hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Mandatory Written Examination
Mandatory Remote On-Line Written Examination: Following completion of all application materials and review of minimum qualifications, successful applicants will be invited to participate in remote on-line written exam testing starting at 9 AM on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 through Thursday, January 23, 2025 at 4 PM. The test will only be available during this time period. Candidates will need to have access to a laptop or desktop computer. All candidates will receive an email approximately one week prior regarding their status in the process, along with further instructions for taking the on-line written exam. NOTE: Please be sure to check your email spam folder. Many email account providers automatically send our emails there in error (i.e. Google, Yahoo, etc.).
To take the online written examination, you must use a computer (or laptop) with internet connection. You cannot take the written exam on a smart phone or tablet. If you do not have access to a computer and internet, you may request use of a Village of Glencoe computer and internet for the written exam. All requests for use of a Village of Glencoe computer and internet must be sent to Human Resources Manager Katy Darr (kdarr@villageofglencoe.orgor 847-461-1197) no later than Monday, January 6, 2025. If you do not request use of a Village computer and internet by January 6, 2025, you will not be provided one to use.
Important Information for Applicants
All applicants must submit the following documents as part of your application. Failure to do so will result in disqualification from the examination process.
- Copy of birth certificate;
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or naturalization;
- Copy of high school diploma or G.E.D.;
- Copy of college transcripts and diploma (if applicable) – unofficial transcripts may be submitted with your application if they include your name, the name of the college or university and identify all credit hours and grades earned (official transcripts may be required by the Village at a later stage in the hiring process);
- Copy of POWER test card issued no earlier than 6 months prior to the date of your application;
- Copy of military service record, discharge and DD-214 (if applicable)
