The Elmhurst, Illinois Board of Fire and Police Commissioners is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter with the Elmhurst Fire Department.

All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the City of Elmhurst:
- At least 21 years of age and under 35 years of age at the time of application (April 28, 2025), except per Illinois Statute 65 ILCS 5/0-1-7 and 5/10-1-12 of the Civil Service Act, which provides in part, that the age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed as a full-time Firefighter in a regularly constituted fire department of any municipality or fire protection district located in Illinois;
- Applicants for examination must be citizens of the United States, except that an individual who is not a citizen but is legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law or is an individual against whom immigration action has been deferred by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) process;
- High school graduate or GED equivalent;
- Possess a valid driver’s license;
- Possess a valid EMT-Basic (EMT-B) License from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) prior to the City extending a conditional offer of employment;
- Present a valid CPAT card with Ladder Climb prior to the City extending a conditional offer of employment, with an issue date within 12 months of the date of the time of conditional employment;
- Must successfully complete a written exam, polygraph, background investigation, oral interview, medical examination, drug test, and psychological examination.
Preference Points will be awarded as determined by the City of Elmhurst for the following:
- Military preference - 5 points. Awarded to applicants who have served a minimum of 12 months on active duty in the service of the U. S. Military and who have either been honorably discharged or, in lieu of an honorable discharge, are still serving in an active or inactive reserve status.
- Education preference – 5 points. Candidates must have an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from an accredited Community or Junior College or a Bachelor’s Degree in any field from an accredited College or University.

Online Written Examination Testing: After completing all application materials and reviewing of minimum qualifications, successful applicants will be invited to participate in remote online written exam testing available between Thursday, May 8, 2025, at 9:00 AM (CDT) and Monday, May 12, 2025, at 4:00 PM (CDT). Candidates will need to have access to a laptop or desktop computer. All candidates will receive an email approximately one week prior regarding their status in the process, along with further instructions for taking the online written exam. NOTE: Please be sure to check your email spam folder. Many email account providers automatically send our emails there in error (i.e. Google, Yahoo, etc.).
