Hiring Process Steps and Timeline

The hiring process for becoming a police officer in the City of Joliet involves several different phases, as outlined below. Please take note of the dates for each component, as there will be NO MAKE-UP DATES OFFERED unless a hiring event is re-scheduled by the City of Joliet. You may want to print this page for your records now. In the unforeseen event that hiring events are rescheduled, applicants will be informed via the contact information provided in their application. In order to take part in the hiring process, applicants must meet the minimum requirements and submit all required application materials (including the application fee).

Phase 1: Submit Application (YOU ARE CURRENTLY AT THIS PHASE). Applicants must complete and submit all application materials by Friday, October 27, 2023 at 4:00 PM (CST).  Candidates requesting preference points must submit documentation at this time.

Next Steps in the Hiring Process

Phase 3:  Oral Interview.  Candidates successfully passing the P.O.W.E.R. test will be invited to participate in the first round of oral interviews.  Oral interviews are tentatively scheduled for November 30 thru December 1, 2023.  More specific information will be provided to applicants approximately one week prior to the interview dates.

Phase 4:  Conditional Offer of Employment.  Applicants successfully completing the oral interview shall be placed on an Initial Eligibility List. Preference Points will then be tabulated for eligible applicants who submitted documentation requesting preference points during the application phase, creating a Final Eligibility List valid for a period of time as determined by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. From this Final Eligibility List, applicants shall be appointed in descending order if/when a job opening occurs and is approved. Employment will be withheld until successful completion of the following:

  • Submission of required documentation (copy of driver's license, birth certificate, etc.);
  • Background investigation;
  • Polygraph examination;
  • Psychological evaluation by a licensed Clinical Psychologist;
  • Medical examination (which shall include a test of the applicant's vision, hearing, presence of communicable diseases, as well as a test to screen for the use of drugs and/or narcotics.);
  • Successful passing of the P.O.W.E.R. Test for a second time following a conditional offer of employment.

In the event that an applicant fails to successfully complete the application process, they are eligible to re-apply the next time the Joliet Board of Fire and Police Commissioners initiates a new selection process provided they meet the requirements at that time.

Important Note to Applicants:  It is the applicant's responsibility to keep the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners informed of any email or physical street address changes if the applicant moves.  If the applicant does not notify the Board of their email or address change and the Board is unable to locate the applicant at the email or physical street address indicated in the application, the applicant may be removed from the eligibility list.
